Automatic EAD Extensions End for Certain Renewals
TITLE: Automatic EAD Extensions End for Certain Renewals
WHAT HAPPENED: DHS published a final rule effective October 14, 2026. It ends automatic extensions of Employment Authorization Documents (EADs, also called Form I-766) for certain renewal applications.
WHO IT AFFECTS: Noncitizens who timely filed an application to renew their EAD in certain employment authorization categories. An EAD is a work-permit document. An automatic extension means an expired EAD could be treated as valid while a renewal was pending.
WHAT TO DO NOW: 1. Check the expiration date on your EAD (Form I-766). 2. Do not assume your EAD is automatically extended. 3. If you have a pending renewal or your EAD is close to expiring, talk to an immigration attorney. 4. Check the source or official DHS guidance because the source does not list the exact categories here.
