DHS Proposes Limits on Work Permits for Certain Immigrants

TITLE: DHS Proposes Limits on Work Permits for Certain Immigrants

WHAT HAPPENED: On June 5, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security published a proposal that would make it harder for some noncitizens to get a work permit (officially called an employment authorization document).

WHO IT AFFECTS: The proposal would apply to noncitizens in these specific situations:

- People who were allowed into the U.S. temporarily for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit (this is called “parole”).

- People who have received deferred action (a temporary decision not to remove them).

- People who have a final removal order but are released from custody under an order of supervision.

It also says that people who admit to, were arrested for, or were convicted of certain criminal acts usually would not get a work permit, unless they help U.S. law enforcement in a major way.

WHAT TO DO NOW: This is only a proposal—it is not a final rule. Nothing changes right now for work permit applications. You do not need to take immediate action. Stay alert for updates from official sources. If you are worried about how a final rule could affect you, speak with an immigration attorney.
