WHAT HAPPENED: The U.S. government indefinitely suspended the “de minimis exemption” — a rule that let international mail packages valued at $800 or less enter without customs duties or tax. A new postal informal entry process for these mail shipments was also put in place.

WHO IT AFFECTS: Anyone in the United States who receives international packages through the mail (including personal items, gifts, or goods ordered from abroad). This includes many immigrants who receive shipments from their home countries.

WHAT TO DO NOW:

• After July 24, 2026, small-value mail packages may be subject to customs duties and a new entry procedure.

• If you are expecting a package from outside the U.S. after that date, check with the sender or postal service about any required forms or fees.

• Keep receipts and tracking information; be ready to pay possible duties when the package arrives.

• This change applies to all international mail, not just commercial purchases.
