TITLE: Proposed Changes to Work Permits for Asylum Seekers (Not Yet Law)

WHAT HAPPENED: DHS published a proposal to change rules for Employment Authorization Documents (EADs, or work permits) based on a pending asylum application. This is only a proposal—it is NOT a current rule and does NOT change anything today.

WHO IT AFFECTS: Asylum applicants who have a pending asylum case and may want to apply for a work permit (EAD).

WHAT TO DO NOW:

- Remember: current rules still apply. You can still apply for an EAD if you meet today’s requirements.

- If you are eligible now, consider applying under the current rules before any future change.

- Watch for updates from USCIS. A proposal does not have an effective date yet, and any final rule would be published later.

- If you wish to submit a public comment on the proposal, check the Federal Register page for the comment deadline (check the source).
