WHAT HAPPENED: DHS is rescinding (canceling) the 2022 public charge rule. Starting September 18, 2026, immigration officers will use a broader view to decide if certain immigrants might become a public charge (someone who depends mainly on the government for cash assistance or long-term care).

WHO IT AFFECTS: Certain immigrants applying for a green card or an immigrant visa who must prove they are not likely to become a public charge.

WHAT TO DO NOW: No immediate step is required, but if you plan to apply for a green card on or after September 18, 2026, speak with an immigration attorney. This change could affect how your application is reviewed.
