TITLE: DHS Rule: Permanent Residence for Children of Foreign Govt Employees

WHAT HAPPENED: The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) changed a rule to allow children born in the U.S. to foreign government employees who are not U.S. citizens to register for permanent residence (permission to live in the U.S. permanently). DHS is also updating Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, and Form G-325R, Biographic Information (Registration); the effective date is September 4, 2026.

WHO IT AFFECTS: Children born in the United States to a foreign government employee who is not a U.S. citizen.
