TITLE: DHS Cancels Language Access Guidance for Funded Programs

WHAT HAPPENED: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) canceled its official guidance that told organizations receiving DHS money how to assist people with limited English. This follows an Executive Order designating English as the official U.S. language. The guidance was a set of instructions, not a law. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act still prohibits national origin discrimination.

WHO IT AFFECTS: Limited English proficient (LEP) people who use services from state, local, or nonprofit groups that get federal financial help from DHS. This includes immigrants, refugees, and others who are not fluent in English.

WHAT TO DO NOW:

- No immediate paperwork or deadline applies to you. The rescission takes effect on July 14, 2026.

- Keep asking for interpretation or translation help when you need it from DHS-funded services.
